It bridges the gap between the aggressive rhythmic foundations of their past and the lush, psychedelic alternative rock sensibilities explored on Wildhund. The result is an album that feels grounded in technical precision but elevated by a distinct sense of dreamlike wonder.

The album marks a fascinating evolution for band leader and multi-instrumentalist Markus “Herbst” Siegenhort’s vision, moving away from the overt genre tropes of metal and toward a more singular, hook-oriented sound. It retains the crunchy, muscular guitar work we expect, but the songwriting has leaned further into a hazy, melodic dreamscape that feels more “alternative” than “metal,” even when the drums are trying to kick a hole through your speakers. The evolution here is one of maturity; they’ve moved from the frantic, jittery energy of their early 20s into a sound that is accessible and well thought-out.

If Mahal Kita was about the beauty of connection, Winnower is about the labor of maintaining it. The production is crisp—courtesy of Halo-Halo Records—giving the intricate drum patterns and interlocking guitars enough room to breathe without suffocating the vocals. Ultimately, Winnower is the sound of a band that has stopped trying to outrun their influences and started trying to outgrow them by carving their own path. It’s a record for people who like their time signatures complex but their feelings simple and direct. It’s a triumphant return that suggests Hikes isn’t just a local Austin treasure anymore.

While “Persimmon” and “To Belong” offer the raw emotional heights we’ve come to expect, the album’s crowning achievement is “Gravity.” It is the definitive track because it showcases a level of restraint that would have been impossible for the band five years ago, with something resembling a traditional song structure and an actual “sing-along” chorus! It manages to feel weightless—living up to its name by defying it—until the final third of the track, where the rhythmic interplay between the drums and the guitars creates a genuine sense of physical pull. While bands like Cage the Elephant and Foster the People were introducing “indie-pop” to the mainstream, the Foo Fighters were doubling down on high-gain distortion and in-your-face drums.

The record also sat in a unique historical pocket. It was the 20th anniversary of Nevermind, and the rock world was feeling particularly nostalgic. Hailing from the rugged coastline of Cornwall, Willie and the Bandits started as a powerhouse trio that defies easy categorization, much to the frustration of record store clerks everywhere. Formed in 2010 around the grit-and-honey vocals of frontman Willie Edwards, the band has spent over a decade blending blues, rock, folk, and world music into a sound that feels as heavy as a North Atlantic swell. While many trios stick to the basics, the Bandits frequently weave in lap steel guitars, double bass, and exotic percussion, (and now Stevie Watts on Hammond organ) earning them a reputation as one of the hardest-working and most sonically diverse live acts on the European circuit.

With Salt Roots, Willie and the Bandits have essentially decided to stop trying to be three different bands at once. Moving away from the more acoustic-leaning, “surf-folk” origins of their earlier work, this record finds the band leaning heavily into a beefier, more electrified sound. It is an evolution that feels less like a reinvention and more like a growth spurt; they haven’t lost their signature lap-steel slide or their percussive punch, but they’ve certainly found the “volume” knob and aren’t afraid to use it.

While the album offers plenty of highlights—The opener “Wheel Jane” and “King Kong” come to mind—“Know My Name” stands out to me as the definitive peak of the track list. It perfectly distills the band’s identity into a single, high-voltage package centering on a slide-guitar hook that is so thick and swaggering it practically demands you buy it a drink. The track also captures that rare intersection of bluesy soul and stadium-rock ambition without feeling like a hollow tribute act. Unlike some of the more experimental offerings that flirt with folk sensibilities, “Know My Name” is a statement of intent… It’s the sound of a band finally standing tall and, appropriately enough, making sure the audience knows exactly who they are.

If you’ve spent any time on the internet lately NOT focused on political B.S., you’ve likely encountered two masked figures from Saguenay, Quebec, looking like polka-dotted escapees from a Jacques Tati nightmare. After their KEXP session went nuclear earlier this year, the duo known as Angine de Poitrine (literally “Chest Pain,” for the uninitiated) had a choice: lean into the “viral meme” status or prove they actually know how to use those custom-sawed microtonal guitars. With the release of Vol. II, they’ve opted for the latter, delivering a record that is as technically dizzying as it is strangely danceable. It is a dense, captivating record that refuses to be background music that suggests the band’s viral success wasn’t a fluke of the algorithm, but a genuine hunger for something that doesn’t fit into a standard 12-note scale.

While 2024’s Vol. 1 felt like a charmingly lo-fi collection of experiments (the sound of two people figuring out how to play in the “cracks” between piano keys) Vol. II is a significantly more muscular affair. The evolution here is one of confidence. Khn’s double-necked guitar work has moved past mere curiosity into a genuine vocabulary of “Mantra-Rock,” while Klek’s drumming has become the anchor that prevents these songs from floating off into the academic ether. They’ve swapped the “outsider art” tag for a seat at the table with the likes of Khruangbin or King Gizzard, albeit a table that has been deliberately sawed into an asymmetrical pentagon.

There are plenty of highlights on the album, but “Fabienk” is indisputably the best track for me. It’s the moment where the band’s Dadaist tendencies and their sheer musicality finally shake hands. The song opens with a squelching, almost aquatic heavily effected guitar-lead that quickly dissolves into a 28 bar 7/4 polyrhythmic pattern that has no business being this catchy. The track artfully manages the tension between the eerie and the familiar. While much of the album delights in making the listener feel slightly seasick, “Fabienk” uses those microtones to create a melody that feels ancient, almost folk-like, before burying it under a mountain of fuzzed-out loops. It is the definitive proof that Angine de Poitrine isn’t just playing “wrong notes” for the sake of a gimmick—they’re laying a new microtonal musical foundation, building a black and white polka-dotted house on it, and inviting us all to a very weird housewarming party.

With the release of Inklings, House of All has finally transitioned from a high-concept curiosity into a functioning, albeit eccentric, musical machine. For a group composed entirely of former members of The Fall, the initial fear was that they would simply be a high-end tribute act to their own trauma. Yet, several albums into this “post-Fall” experiment, Inklings suggests that instead of running away from the ghost of Mark E. Smith, they’ve simply invited him to sit in the corner while they get on with the business of being a remarkably tight rock band. Ultimately, Inklings proves that House of All isn’t just a harbor for survivors; it’s a destination.

The evolution here is subtle but vital. While their self-titled debut felt like a frantic exorcism and the intervening releases played with improvised murk, Inklings is the sound of a band that actually sat down and rehearsed. There is a diamond-hard consistency to the grooves provided by the Hanley-Hanley-Wolstencroft rhythm section—a three-headed drumming and bass beast that could probably keep time for a tectonic plate shift. Martin Bramah, meanwhile, remains the quintessential cryptic captain, steering the ship with Shakespearean nods and a vocal delivery that sits somewhere between a street preacher and a very disappointed history professor.

The standout moment, and arguably the best song on the record, is “Valiant Heart.” While the band is famous for their jagged, stop-start aggression, this track reveals a surprising, almost melancholic depth that they’ve previously kept under lock and key. It’s the emotional center of the album, anchored by a guitar line that feels expansive rather than claustrophobic. It justifies its place as the “best” because it proves the band can do more than just rattle the cages of the avant-garde; they can actually craft a melody that lingers long after the feedback has faded. It’s the sound of the band allowing a crack of light into their basement workshop.

For a band that usually operates like a 12-headed blues hydra, Tedeschi Trucks Band’s sixth studio album, Future Soul, feels remarkably lean. Released in March 2026, it arrives as the “approachable” sibling to the 2022 sprawling four-part epic, I Am the Moon. Where that project was a marathon through Persian poetry and improvisational jazz-rock, Future Soul is firmly back in the band’s blues rock wheelhouse. Working with producer Mike Elizondo, the band has traded some of their trademark twenty-minute excursions for actual choruses you can hum in the shower, and surprisingly, the world hasn’t ended. The comic-book cover art, featuring the duo as guitar-wielding superheroes fighting robots, might be a little “on the nose” for a band that has literally been called the saviors of rock, but the music inside earns them the cape.

The record marks a fascinating point in the TTB evolution. For over a decade, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi have been the undisputed high priests of the “analog and proud” movement, but here they finally let a little bit of the modern world into the studio. The production is crisp and punchy, placing Susan’s vocals so far in the front that you can practically hear the tea she drank before the session. In the grand scheme of their discography, Future Soul is the “get-to-the-point” album. It’s the sound of a band that has already proven they can play anything and is now undergoing a bit of a sonic makeover—Its cleaner, sharper, and arguably more fun.

While the radio-friendly “I Got You” and the swampy “Crazy Cryin’” are getting the early headlines, the title track is my pick from this new record. “Future Soul” is essentially a mission statement wrapped in a muscular riff. It’s my favorite song on the album because it perfectly captures the tension of the band’s current era: the struggle to keep “soul” alive in a digital, paper-thin world. Susan’s delivery on the line, “They want it on paper but we got it on wax,” is delivered with a grit that reminds you she’s still a powerhouse, even when she isn’t competing with a five-minute drum solo. The track also serves as a bridge between the improvisational fire of their past and the streamlined songwriting of their present. It features Derek playing a 1958 Flying V with a ferocity that suggests he’s trying to personally kick-start the heart of rock and roll.

In the mid-1990s, the “post-Nirvana“ major label feeding frenzy was in full swing, and A&M Records—searching for the next weird thing—found it in a group of Cincinnati stalwarts called the Ass Ponys.

Now, thirty years after the April 1996 release of their second major-label effort, The Known Universe, the album stands as a fascinating artifact of a time when “alternative” music was still allowed to be genuinely eccentric, uncomfortably local, and deeply human.

Produced by John Curley of The Afghan Whigs, The Known Universe is the sonic midpoint between the band’s scrappy garage-folk origins and the more polished, emotionally resonant work frontman Chuck Cleaver would later produce with Wussy.

The album is anchored by Cleaver’s distinctive, high-pitched “corkscrew” falsetto—a voice that feels perpetually on the verge of either a breakdown or a breakthrough. Musically, it’s a tight, semi-acoustic affair. Standout tracks like “And She Drowned” and “Shoe Money” feature a chunky, melodic drive. Cleaver’s dark-humor infused songwriting doesn’t just tell stories; it creates dioramas of Midwestern life, filled with “normal freak show” details often accompanied by alt-country elements of pedal steel and folk-rock arrangements that lean into the “Old, Weird America” aesthetic.

By 1996, the grunge movement was beginning to atrophy into the polished “post-grunge” sound. The Known Universe stood in stark opposition to this. It wasn’t interested in being cool or “heavy” in a traditional sense. Instead, it was culturally significant for contributing to the “Cincinnati Scene.” Alongside The Afghan Whigs, the Ass Ponys proved that Cincinnati was a hub for a specific kind of literate, gritty, and soulful rock that didn’t need to sound like Seattle or New York.

It represents a brief (hopeful) window in music history where a band named “Ass Ponys”—singing about 75-word existential despairs and eccentric grandmothers—could get a massive distribution deal. It helped bridge the gap between 80s college rock (think early R.E.M.) and the burgeoning alt-country movement of the late 90s, prioritizing storytelling over genre tropes.

Retrospectively, The Known Universe is the moment where Chuck Cleaver truly sharpened his pen. While the band’s earlier work was often dismissed as “quirky” or “humorous,” this record began to reveal the “sullen grace” that would define Cleaver’s later career and hasn’t aged a day, mostly because it never tried to be “trendy” in the first place. It remains a shining example of Midwestern Gothic songwriting—equal parts funny, disturbing, and heart-wrenching.

While Chuck Cleaver is the undisputed face of the Ass Ponys, The Known Universe is a definitive “ensemble” record. By 1996, the band had transitioned from a loose collection of Ohio friends into a sophisticated, telepathic unit with Cleaver the primary architect of the album’s lyrical world. On The Known Universe, his writing shifted from the purely bizarre to a more grounded, literary “Midwestern Gothic.” His vocal delivery on tracks like “God Tells Me To” is iconic—strained, high-pitched, and filled with a nervous energy that perfectly mirrored the undercurrent of quiet anxiety rippling through the 90s.

Often described as the band’s secret weapon, Randy Cheek (who sadly passed away in 2024) provided much more than just a low end. On the track “Under Cedars and Stars,” Cheek actually provided the lyrics. His writing style was slightly more ethereal and poetic than Cleaver’s, providing a beautiful contrast. His playing was never just “thumping”; it was highly melodic and often carried the hook of the song as much as the guitar did.

Guitarist Bill Alletzhauser joined just in time for this record, replacing original guitarist John Erhardt. His arrival fundamentally changed the band’s texture by bringing a more layered, atmospheric approach to the guitar work. His use of slide guitar and banjo (as heard on “Hagged”) helped cement the “alt-country” label that was beginning to follow the band. Dave Morrison provided the steady, often understated heartbeat of the album. The Known Universe required a drummer who could pivot from the driving indie-rock of “Shoe Money” to the delicate, brush-work feel of the album’s quieter moments. Morrison also handled keyboard duties, adding the subtle swells and textures that made this record feel more “produced” and “universal” than their previous lo-fi outings.

You cannot talk about the sound of this era without mentioning producer John Curley (bassist for The Afghan Whigs). Curley recorded the album at his Ultrasuede Studios in Cincinnati and helped the band capture a “cleaner” sound without sacrificing their grit. He was instrumental in making Cleaver’s vocals “decisively legible”—allowing the intricate storytelling to sit right at the front of the mix.

If Electric Rock Music (released in 1994 and is definitely worth a listen) was their “hit” record (thanks to “Little Bastard”), The Known Universe was their “writer’s” record. It laid the groundwork for the emotional maturity found in their final albums, Some Stupid with a Flare Gun (great title) and Lohio, and eventually provided the DNA for Wussy, which some critics now consider one of the best American bands of the 21st century.

A decade ago, Kaoru Ishibashi—the violin-looping wizard better known as Kishi Bashi—found himself in a bit of a creative pickle. After the neon-soaked, orchestral maximalism of 151a and Lighght, he was running on “musical fumes” and facing a crumbling marriage. The result of that exhaustion was Sonderlust, an album that swapped sprawling symphonics for vintage synths and raw, analog vulnerability. Now, the 10th Anniversary Edition has arrived, polished up and packaged with a treasure trove of “Demo-arigato” versions that let us peek under the hood of his 2016 mid-life (and mid-career) crisis.

Sonderlust is the pivot point where Kishi Bashi stopped trying to be a one-man Pixar soundtrack and started being a human being. It remains the most fascinating branch of his evolution: the moment he traded his “orchestral ringmaster” hat for a Juno-106 synth and some very honest lyrics about wanting to run away. It paved the way for the more grounded, sociopolitical storytelling of Omoiyari and the genre-hopping Kantos. Without this record, he might still be trapped in a loop of “Bright Whites” clones, doomed to pluck his violin until his fingers fell off.

Ten years later, Sonderlust doesn’t feel like a relic of 2016’s indie-pop scene; it feels like a survivor’s manual for creative burnout. It’s an album that proves you can be heartbroken and still want to dance—or at least sway rhythmically while staring at a Moog.

While the album is famous for the dancy “Can’t Let Go, Juno” and the infectious “Honeybody,” My pick is “Who’d You Kill.” In a record obsessed with the “sonder” of others’ lives (the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own), this song creates a ton of atmospheric tension. It’s a “creeper” in the best sense—beginning with a skeletal rhythm before blooming into a cinematic pop landscape that feels like a space-age noir film. It captures the album’s central conflict: the desire for connection clashing with the fear of being seen. If the rest of the album is a party in a neon-lit basement, “Who’d You Kill” is the quiet, slightly ominous conversation happening in the alleyway outside.

The newly released “Who’d You Kill (Demo-arigato Version)” is also a particularly good example of how a song goes from an idea to fully fleshed-out. Stripped of the lush production, this version is lean and scrappy. It clocks in significantly shorter than the album version, highlighting the song’s fundamental architecture before the “space alien b-movie” synths were layered on top, and is almost more compelling for it. Hearing the “Demo-arigato” tracks back-to-back with the originals makes you appreciate the final product; you can practically hear Ishibashi figuring out how to balance his virtuosic tendencies with the “less is more” ethos that defines this era.

If the 2022 release of Valesa - Chapter I: Velvet Prison was Major Parkinson’s attempt to curate a sleek, synth-pop exhibition inside a neon-lit bunker, then Chapter II: Viva The Apocalypse! is what happens when the power fails and the exhibits start coming after you. Released on March 13, 2026, this second installment manages to be both a logical continuation and a violent stylistic pivot, proving once again that the only thing predictable about this Norwegian ensemble is their refusal to stay in one place for more than a single album.

Major Parkinson didn’t just appear out of thin air; they crawled out of the theatrical underbelly of Bergen, Norway, in 2003. The band’s name itself was reportedly discovered in an old theater building, a fitting origin for a group that treats every album like a three-act play. They first made waves by winning the local Eggstock festival, eventually catching the ear of legendary producer Sylvia Massy (Tool, System of a Down) for their 2008 debut.

Evolutionarily, the band has always been a bit of a moving target. They’ve traveled from the jagged, circus-punk energy of their early years to the cavernous, “everything-including-the-kitchen-sink” prog of Blackbox. While Chapter I was a focused dive into 80s nostalgia and digital claustrophobia, Viva The Apocalypse! brings back the dirt. The production is wider, the live instrumentation is more aggressive, and Jon Ivar Kollbotn sounds less like a crooning lounge singer and more like a man trying desperately to convince you that he has the secret to all of life’s mysteries. The record has a visceral, “spit-on-the-lens” energy that was missing from its predecessor. The synths are still there, but they’ve been forced to share the stage with a snarling horn section and guitars that actually sound like they’re plugged into something.

While the title track is a brass-heavy riot and “Karma Supernova” offers the kind of sprawling prog epic that makes listeners feel like they’ve survived a marathon, “Showbiz” is undeniably the album’s centerpiece. It is the perfect bridge between the two chapters: it retains the infectious 80s synth hooks of Velvet Prison but injects them with the raw, live-wire theatricality that defines the band’s best work. It possesses a melody so sharp it could cut through a major label record contract. It’s accessible enough to hum, yet weird enough to make you look over your shoulder while doing so. Jon Ivar Kollbotn’s gravelly, “street-preacher” vocals perfectly sell the song’s cynical take on fame. It feels like a mythology of celebrity viewed through the bottom of a chipped whiskey glass. The track doesn’t just end; it evolves. The callbacks to earlier motifs (like the “Show me the killer” refrain) reward the dedicated fan while the “Apocalypse Choir” elevates the whole affair into a grand, dark-pop spectacle.

With the release of So Much Love (2026), New Orleans’ favorite trombone-heavy powerhouse, Bonerama, has finally delivered a studio effort that feels less like a “project” and more like a family reunion. After years of detouring through specific tributes—most notably their high-octane 2019 reimagining of Led Zeppelin—the band has pivoted back to a broader, “gumbo” philosophy. This record isn’t just a collection of songs; it’s a career-spanning victory lap that somehow avoids looking in the rearview mirror for too long.

The evolution here is subtle but significant. Where earlier records like Hot Like Fire (2017) leaned heavily into the “Supafunkrock” label, So Much Love feels like the band is finally comfortable in its own brass skin. The band has stopped trying to prove they can play rock—we know that already—and has instead focused on how they can make rock (and soul, and funk) sound like a natural extension of a Crescent City second line. The addition of heavy-hitting guests like Trombone Shorty and Ivan Neville doesn’t feel like a marketing gimmick; it feels like the band is finally claiming its rightful seat at the head of the NOLA table.

Side Note (and shameless self-promotion): Back in 2019 I started a “band” with a similar concept in Portland, OR… To play (and ideally, revitalize) aging rock songs with very un-rock instrumentation. It was called RiverRock Orchestra, and while it included a rock rhythm section (drums and electric bass) all the other instruments were orchestral with NO chorded melodic instruments all (no guitars, no keyboards, instead opting for violins, violas, cellos, sax, trombone and trumpet). Unfortunately, the lockdowns of 2020 prevented us from performing live but we did manage to release an album in 2021 to immortalize the concept before I eventually left town in 2022.

While So Much Love is peppered with standout moments—including a revised “Empty World,” Pink Floyd’s “In The Flesh,” (Featuring Stanton Moore from Galactic and Ivan Neville) and a sprawling “Meters Medley”—it is their cover of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s “Ohio” that serves as the standout of the track list for me. This choice might seem like a safe bet given its pedigree, but Bonerama treats the protest anthem with a level of brass-bound aggression that would make Neil Young do a double-take. Backed by the formidable trifecta of Trombone Shorty, Cyril Neville, and Ivan Neville, the track transforms from a folk-rock lament into a menacing, low-end-heavy stomp. The beauty of this rendition is that it treats the trombone not as a brass instrument, but as a lead guitar with a sinus problem. Because the track features a “brass-heavy” lineup—including the core Bonerama slides and the guest power of Trombone Shorty—the solo sections function more like a heavyweight fight than a standard jazz improvisation.

Trombones are inherently “vocal” instruments, but here they don’t just mimic the melody; they provide the snarl. The slide-greased grit of the horn line replaces the feedback of the original’s electric guitars, providing a visceral weight that feels incredibly modern. It’s the sound of a protest march that isn’t just walking—it’s charging. The collaboration with the Nevilles adds a layer of New Orleans royalty that grounds the song’s political urgency in a way that feels authentic to the city’s own history of resilience.

The Third Mind’s latest EP, Spellbinder, feels less like a studio session and more like a high-stakes seance held in a room full of vintage tube amps. For a supergroup that began as an experiment in spontaneous “no-rehearsal” psychedelic folk-rock, the band—led by Dave Alvin (The Blasters) and Victor Krummenacher (Camper Van Beethoven, Cracker)—seems to have finally stopped drifting through the astral plane long enough to build a residency there. While their earlier work felt like a daring tightrope walk over 1960s blues-rock, Spellbinder! is evidence that the band has realized they’ve actually grown wings and no longer need the rope.

The evolution here is subtle but vital. On their self-titled debut and the subsequent The Third Mind 2, the band was largely introducing themselves to one another’s shadows. Now, the interplay is telepathic. Jesse Sykes’ vocals don’t just sit on top of the mix; they haunt it, acting as the eerie connective tissue between Alvin’s scorched-earth guitar solos and the rhythm section’s steady, hypnotic pulse. They’ve moved past the jammy “tribute project” phase and into a space where they are effectively terraforming the landscape of American roots music into something much weirder and more expansive.

While the EP is a cohesive trip, “Reap What You Sow” (written by blues legend Michael Bloomfield) stands out as the definitive highlight. In a collection of songs that often meander beautifully, this downtempo blues track finds the perfect middle ground between the dreaminess of midday drunken reverie and the intensity of a freight train. The song manages to feel both incredibly heavy and impossibly light, like a floating balloon that would drop a cinder block in popped. Unlike some of their more sprawling jams that can occasionally feel like they’re checking their watches, “Reap What You Sow” possesses a focused, simmering menace. Alvin’s guitar work here is particularly biting—it’s the sound of a man who has heard every blues lick in history and decided to use them all at once just to see which one burns the hottest.

Forty years ago, on March 24, 1986, Van Halen did the impossible: they replaced the irreplaceable.

Retrospectively, 5150 is more than just an album; it was a high-stakes survival maneuver. Coming off the massive success of 1984, the departure of flamboyant frontman David Lee Roth felt like a death knell to many. Yet, 5150 didn’t just keep the band alive—it gave them their first-ever #1 album on the Billboard 200, a feat the original lineup had never achieved.

The introduction of Sammy Hagar into the mix changed the fundamental DNA of the band. Where Roth was a vaudevillian trickster who treated vocals as an extension of his persona, Hagar was a “musician’s singer”—a powerhouse vocalist who could also play a mean guitar.

On paper, this had all the hallmarks of a good move… Hagar’s ability to play rhythm guitar allowed Eddie Van Halen to step away from his six-string and lean further into synthesizers (as seen in “Love Walks In” and “Dreams”). The “Diamond Dave” era was defined by suggestive double entendres and “party-rock” swagger. Hagar brought a more earnest, blue-collar sentimentality. For the first time, Van Halen was singing about “tried and true” love rather than just the “Hot for Teacher” variety. Finally, Songs like “Dreams” required a melodic, high-tenor vocal range that Roth simply didn’t possess. Hagar brought a raw, professional power that allowed the band to evolve into a more mature, stadium-filling force. But, would the fans get behind it?

Looking back four decades later, 5150 stands as one of the most successful “vocalist swaps” in rock history (even rivaling Brian Johnson joining AC/DC for 1980’s Back In Black). While the Roth years were arguably more groundbreaking and “cool,” the Hagar years were more musically diverse and commercially dominant. The album’s title itself—a California police code for a 72-hour psychiatric hold—symbolized the “insane” risk the band was taking (or perhaps why the change was necessary… Let’s be honest, as much as I like Dave, he’s always been a little batshit). Forty years on, it is clear that 5150 wasn’t a sign of madness, but a stroke of genius that kept one of rock’s most important legacies thriving well into the 1990s.

The album marked a significant transition in the band’s internal chemistry as well. Eddie Van Halen took more creative control than ever, moving further away from the raw, guitar-centric shreds of the late ‘70s toward a sophisticated, synth-heavy production style. Alex Van Halen provided a tighter, more processed drum sound that anchored the 80s aesthetic (The Simmons SDS-V series electronic drum sounds take center stage on this record), while Michael Anthony continued to be the band’s “secret weapon,” providing those soaring high-tenor harmonies that smoothed over the transition to a more radio-friendly sound.

The lead single, “Why Can’t This Be Love,” was a bold statement in a couple of ways… Opening with a synthesizer hook rather than a guitar riff, it signaled that “Van Hagar” was continuing the exploration into synths in their songwriting. The single also established, right out the gate, that the songs would be something different lyrically as well. Dave tended to focus on the downsides of love (What was Jamie doing? Crying. What do you do when your love interest doesn’t reciprocate? Might as well jump. You get the idea.), but Sammy was unafraid of love as a concept. While the 5150 era of VH is dominated by the massive radio hits like “Why Can’t This Be Love,” “Love Walks In,” and “Dreams,” the album’s real depth—and its bridge to the band’s past—lies in the tracks that didn’t necessarily saturate the airwaves. These “hidden gems” are often the ones where the band sounds the most liberated and experimental.

“5150” (The Title Track, and my personal favorite)

For the purists, the title track proved Eddie hadn’t lost his touch. It remains one of his most complex arrangements, featuring intricate tapping and a relentless drive that reminded everyone why he was the king of the six-string. While “Dreams” was the pop peak, “5150” is the guitar peak. It features some of Eddie’s most complex and progressive chord changes, shifting through rhythmic variations that feel almost mathy (or dare we say “proggy”?), yet the song still comes across as incredibly soulful. Fans (like me) often point to this as the “true” Van Halen moment on the record, where Eddie’s frantic, joyful energy proves that the change in singers didn’t dampen his technical fire. It’s nearly six minutes of pure adrenaline that rarely gets the “greatest hits” credit it deserves.

“Summer Nights”

This track is a masterclass in Eddie’s ability to weave a groove. Written using a Steinberger guitar (the headless, futuristic-looking one), it has a unique, “twangy” clean tone in the verses that feels loose and funky—a rarity for the Hagar era. It’s a quintessential “cool down” song that captures the atmosphere of a California evening. While it was a staple of the 1986 tour, it is often overlooked today in favor of the more popular keyboard-centric tracks.

“Get Up”

If you’re looking for the heaviest, most relentless moment on the album, this is it. “Get Up” is a frantic, high-speed rocker that features Alex Van Halen on a tear, utilizing a hybrid electronic/acoustic drum setup that gives the song a metallic, industrial punch. It’s one of the few songs on the record that retains the “dangerous” feeling of the David Lee Roth era, bordering on Metallica-esque thrash. It serves as a reminder that even in their new, polished form, the band could still clear a room if they wanted to.

“Inside”

As the album closer, “Inside” is the weirdest thing Van Halen had recorded up to that point. It’s an avant-garde, funk-inspired jam that sounds like a group of friends joking around in the studio (which they literally were). With spoken-word ad-libs and a “behind the scenes” feel, it was a polarizing track. To some, it felt like filler; to others, it was a refreshing glimpse into the band’s internal camaraderie after years of tension with Roth. It’s a “hidden gem” because it shows the band’s human side—messy, laughing, and unconcerned with perfection.

“Good Enough”

While it opens the album, it often gets overshadowed by the singles that follow. “Good Enough” is a classic boogie-rocker that features Sammy Hagar’s famous “Hello Baby!” intro. It’s significant because it’s the most “traditional” Van Halen song on the disc—the kind of track that could have easily existed on 1984. It proved right out of the gate that the band hadn’t forgotten how to throw a party.

At the time of its release, 5150 was a massive commercial juggernaut. Despite the skepticism of “Diamond Dave” loyalists, the album became Van Halen’s first Number 1 on the Billboard 200. Critics were divided—some missed the dangerous edge of the original lineup, while others praised the improved musicianship and songcraft.

Culturally, 5150 defined the mid-to-late 80s “Arena Rock” era. It helped bridge the gap between heavy metal and mainstream pop, making Van Halen accessible to a much broader audience. It proved that a legendary band could lose its iconic frontman and not only survive but thrive. The “Van Hagar” era was born, and for a decade, it would dominate the airwaves, proving that the band’s core—Eddie’s genius—was adaptable enough to conquer any musical landscape.

Today, the band releases an expanded version of the record containing the 2023 remasters, additional remastered bonus tracks, and the complete 8/27/1986 show from New Haven, CT where a lot of the video footage came from. Bottom line… This is a great record and definitely worth a re-visit if you’re looking for an excuse to take a trip down memory lane.

After 15 years of dormancy, Eric Bachmann has officially dusted off the Crooked Fingers moniker for Swet Deth (released on Feb. 27, 2026), an album whose title is as much a mission statement as it is a callback to his son’s macabre childhood drawings.

In the grand evolution of the band, Swet Deth feels like the ultimate “full circle” moment. If 2011’s Breaks in the Armor was a sparse, solitary retreat, this new record is a crowded room. Bachmann has spent the last decade and a half oscillating between solo folk and the high-octane reunion of Archers of Loaf, but Swet Deth captures a hybrid energy that only Crooked Fingers can manage. It’s more collaborative than anything in the back catalog, pulling in heavy hitters like Matt Berninger and Sharon Van Etten. It feels like a veteran songwriter realizing that mortality is a much easier pill to swallow when you have a super-talented backing band to help bring your songs to life.

The record is surprisingly vibrant for something so obsessed with the “end of the line.” It’s an album that acknowledges the heart attacks (both literal and metaphorical) of the past few years but chooses to respond with power-pop hooks and pedal steel instead of just more gloom. Swet Deth is a rare comeback that doesn’t try to reclaim youth, but rather finds a way to make middle-aged reckoning sound like a celebration. It’s a record for anyone who has ever looked at a graveyard and thought, “Well, at least the grass is green.”

Among a track list filled with star-studded duets, “Insomnia” is my favorite track because it feels like the purest distillation of the Crooked Fingers spirit. While “Cold Waves” and “Haunted” benefit from their shiny guest spots, “Insomnia” is where Bachmann reminds us that he can still command a room with nothing but his cured-meat vocals and a sense of mounting dread. With its jerky syncopated beat, the song perfectly captures the specific, itchy anxiety of the small hours. It doesn’t romanticize the lack of sleep; it treats it like a physical weight. The way the intensity continually ratchets up feels like the sun slowly hitting the wall when you’ve given up on the idea of rest. Stripped of the high-profile features found elsewhere on the record, it highlights the core chemistry between Bachmann, Jeremy Wheatley, and Jon Rauhouse, and reminds us why this project needed to be resurrected under this specific name.

Back in 1975, Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart—two men whose relationship could best be described as a lifelong game of creative chicken—collided in Austin, Texas. The result was Bongo Fury (released in 1976), a record that captures the grit of the Armadillo World Headquarters and the studio-polished absurdity of the Record Plant. It remains a fascinating anomaly: a “Mothers” album that serves as the swan song for the band name while featuring the Captain’s gravel-pit vocals and Zappa’s increasingly sharp guitar architecture.

The album is essentially a blues-rock fever dream. While Zappa’s mid-70s work was often defined by hyper-precise jazz-fusion, Bongo Fury lets the edges stay frayed in this mostly live record (with some studio overdubs added later). Much of this is due to Beefheart (Don Van Vliet), who provides spoken-word surrealism and harmonica work that sounds like a freight train trying to apologize. Supported by a powerhouse band featuring a young Terry Bozzio and the legendary George Duke, the music swings between tight, funky grooves and the kind of avant-garde detours that make you wonder if the stage was actually melting.

Now, as of March 2026, this raucous collaboration is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a massive deluxe edition that Zappa’s “Vaultmeister” Joe Travers has clearly poured some serious sweat into. The new Super Deluxe box set is a 5CD/1Blu-ray beast featuring the original Bob Ludwig master alongside a staggering 80% of previously unreleased material. If we are forced to pick the “weirdest” song—a dangerous task in the Zappaverse—the crown goes to “Muffin Man.” While tracks like “Sam With The Showing Scalp Flat Top” and “Debra Kadabra” provide the ultimate glimpse into the Beefheartian mind, “Muffin Man” is the quintessential Zappa anthem. It begins with a deadpan, pseudo-scientific narration from “the Utility Muffin Research Kitchen” and the age-old legal case of “Muffin v. Cupcake,” only to explode into one of the most blistering and melodic guitar solos Frank ever committed to tape. Six years after the critically acclaimed Flyover Country, Cody Diekhoff—better known as Chicago Farmer—has returned with Homeaid. For those keeping score at home, this 2026 release marks a significant milestone: it is the first studio LP where Diekhoff officially hands the keys to his touring band, The Fieldnotes.

Historically, Chicago Farmer was the quintessential “guy with a guitar and a story,” a spiritual heir to Arlo Guthrie and John Prine who spent two decades proving that Americana is essentially just “unsuccessful country” with better lyrics. But on Homeaid, the solo troubadour evolution reaches its next form. By bringing in The Fieldnotes (and producer Chad Staehly), Diekhoff hasn’t just added a drum kit; he’s traded in the acoustic sedan for a full-sized Midwestern work truck. The record is thicker, louder, and carries the rugged, “first-take” energy of a band that has spent too many nights together in the back of a van.

Homeaid is the sound of a man realizing he doesn’t have to do the heavy lifting alone. The inclusion of songs like “The Twenty Dollar Bill”—a reprisal of an older fan favorite—serves as a clever wink to the long-time listeners, showing how much a simple story can grow when you add a Hammond organ and a rhythm section that actually knows where the “one” is. On an album that often favors the “loud and proud” approach of the full band, “Peshtigo” is the song that justifies that approach. It chronicles the Great Peshtigo Fire of 1871—a tragedy that killed more people than the Great Chicago Fire but was largely ignored by the history books because, well, Chicago had a better publicist. Diekhoff treats the narrative with a somber, cinematic weight that prevents it from feeling like a dry history lecture and showcases Diekhoff’s sharpest writing, transforming a 150-year-old disaster into a haunting meditation on how quickly everything we build can turn to ash. The Fieldnotes show immense restraint here. Instead of trampling the story with volume, they provide a smoldering, mid-tempo backdrop that feels as thick and claustrophobic as the smoke in the lyrics while giving the track the necessary gravity to balance out the album’s more boisterous moments.

To listen to Sunya, the latest chapter in The Dear Hunter’s increasingly crowded shelf of concept records, is to realize that Casey Crescenzo has officially traded his 19th-century tailcoat for a neon-trimmed flight suit. Released on March 20, 2026, Sunya serves as the lush, synth-heavy sequel to 2022’s Antimai. If the previous record was a guided tour through a dystopian city’s rigid caste system, Sunya is the next chapter on the journey towards a post-human paradise.

The band’s evolution is on full display here, and it’s a far cry from the post-hardcore theatrics of Act I or the orchestral sweep of Act IV. The Dear Hunter has spent the last few years flirting with “future funk,” and on Sunya, they’ve finally moved in and started world building. The record leans heavily into jazz-fusion, space-age pop, and grooves so tight they could probably hold a collapsing building together better than duct tape. It feels less like a traditional rock opera and more like the soundtrack to a high-budget sci-fi film that exists only in Casey’s head (and maybe it is)—one where everyone wears capes and the basslines are legally required to be “filthy.”

Ultimately, Sunya proves that The Dear Hunter isn’t interested in circling back to earlier incarnations, even if the fans occasionally beg for another “Red Hands.” They are a band in a constant state of molting, shedding their previous skins to reveal something shinier and more rhythmically challenging. It’s ambitious, it’s a bit pretentious, and it’s undeniably catchy—which is exactly what we’ve come to expect from a group that refuses to let a simple four-chord progression get in the way of a good story.

While the rest of Sunya occasionally wanders into the tall grass of atmospheric world-building, “Bazaareteria” opens on the launch pad with the countdown already in progress. It’s the sonic equivalent of a high-speed escapade through a futuristic black market, featuring a bassline so aggressive it feels like it’s trying to pick a fight with the drummer. This is the peak of the band’s “future funk” evolution—it’s catchy enough for a club in Ring 1 (obligatory Antimai reference) but complex enough to keep a music theory professor sweating. Casey Crescenzo leans into a soulful, almost frantic delivery here. He captures the desperation of the “Market of the Unseen” perfectly, transitioning from smooth crooning to those signature grit-filled belts that remind you why you fell in love with this band in the first place.

In 2006, a trio from Sydney, Australia, emerged in the US with a sound so brazenly “retro” that it felt less like a debut and more like a lost master tape from 1972. Twenty years later, Wolfmother’s self-titled debut stands as a fascinating artifact—a record that was simultaneously a peak of the mid-2000s garage rock revival and a precursor to the “stoner-rock” nostalgia that dominates much of today’s modern psych-rock scene.

Produced by Dave Sardy, Wolfmother was a sonic gut-punch. From the opening “Colossal,” the listener is met with a fuzzed-out wall of sound that owes everything to the “unholy trinity” of 70s rock: the bluesy swagger of Led Zeppelin, the leaden sludge of Black Sabbath, and the prog-keyboard flourishes of Deep Purple.

In the mid-2000s, the “IN” bands—The Strokes, The White Stripes, The Vines—were the kings of cool. However, much of that movement was rooted in a certain art-school detachment or garage-punk minimalism. Wolfmother was different. They were entirely, almost dangerously, un-ironic. They wore the bell-bottoms, grew the afros, and sang about “vagabonds” and “dimensions” without a hint of a wink to the camera. At the time, they were the “diet” version of the 70s for a generation that hadn’t yet discovered the deep cuts of Sabbath or Blue Cheer.

Retrospectively, the debut was the only time Wolfmother felt like a true band. The chemistry between Andrew Stockdale, Chris Ross (bass/keys), and Myles Heskett (drums) was lightning in a bottle. Ross’s distorted Hammond organ and Heskett’s Bonham-lite drumming provided a weight that later iterations of the band struggled to replicate.

Unfortunately, by 2008 the original lineup imploded due to “irreconcilable differences,” and Wolfmother effectively became an Andrew Stockdale solo project. While follow-up albums like Cosmic Egg (2009) and Victorious (2016) had flashes of brilliance, they often felt like Stockdale trying to recapture the specific “vibe” of the original breakthrough but without his original bandmates.

To understand why Wolfmother hit like a sledgehammer in 2006, you have to look at the sonic landscape of the time. The mid-2000s were a period of deep fragmentation in rock, and Wolfmother arrived as a unifying, high-voltage alternative to the “moods” that were dominating the charts.

In 2005, rock fans were generally caught between three distinct (and often exhausting) movements… Post-grunge acts like Nickelback and Staind still held a firm grip on the radio. This music was heavy but often criticized for being overly serious, mid-tempo, and formulaic. 2006 was the year of Fall Out Boy (with From Under the Cork Tree released in mid-2005) and Panic! At The Disco. While catchy, this sound was polished, youthful, and high-pitched—polar opposites of the grit-and-grime of 70s rock. The Strokes, The White Stripes, and Franz Ferdinand had made rock “hip” again, but their sound was often thin, intellectual, or angular. They were “garage,” but they didn’t necessarily convey the “heavy rock” ethos.

Wolfmother bridged a gap that many didn’t realize existed. They took the cool factor of the garage rock revival but injected it with the sheer volume and mysticism of early heavy metal. For a fan who loved the White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army” but found indie rock too wimpy, or who loved Black Sabbath but found modern metal too “screamy,” Wolfmother was the perfect middle ground.

For rock purists, Wolfmother felt like a “Correction” in the musical landscape. It was a return to the Power Trio format—just guitar, bass/organ, and drums—proving that you didn’t need a laptop or a five-piece band to fill a stadium.

While many bands of the era were hiding behind lyrics with heavy doses of sarcasm or art-school concepts, Wolfmother sang about pyramids, unicorns, and witchcraft. It was as fantastical and escapist as a Tolkien novel: a breath of fresh air to gen-Xers compared to the self-serious “heart-on-sleeve” lyrics of the emo era or the political weight of Green Day’s American Idiot (2004).

In an era of increasingly “clicky” digital production, Dave Sardy gave Wolfmother a warm, analog saturation. It sounded like it was recorded on tape in a room with wood paneling, which felt “authentic” to listeners tired of the hyper-compressed sound of 2000s radio. For younger listeners (specifically the Guitar Hero generation), Wolfmother served as a bridge. They were a modern band you could see live, but they pointed you directly toward the legends. You bought Wolfmother, and six months later, you were buying Black Sabbath’s Paranoid.

Interestingly, the album was so successful that it sparked a debate about “authenticity.” Some critics labeled them “False Metal,” arguing they were just an expensive tribute act. However, for fans, this didn’t matter. The record provided something that had been missing from the mainstream for nearly 15 years: “The Riff” as the primary protagonist of the song.

Two decades on, the criticisms of the time—that they were “unoriginal” or a “Sabbath-clone” feel less relevant. In a musical landscape now populated by bands like Greta Van Fleet and Rival Sons, Wolfmother’s debut looks more like the blueprint for the modern “Vintage Rock” industry.

Wolfmother remains a joyous, loud, and unpretentious celebration of the riff.

It took five years for Poland’s premier “botanical enthusiasts” to return with their latest dispatch, but V has finally drifted into view. Released in early 2026, the album stands as evidence that Weedpecker has spent their hiatus woodshedding in order to build up their prog chops. While they’ve always been the “thinking man’s” stoner band, V marks a definitive pivot away from the hazy, kaleidoscopic spirals of pure psychedelia toward a more structured, modern prog-rock architecture. It’s as if the band decided that instead of just staring at the stars until they saw shapes, they’d rather build a complex telescope to alert humanity when those stars come crashing down.

The evolution here is striking. On earlier records like II and III, Weedpecker excelled at the “wall of fuzz” approach—layers of shimmering guitars that felt like being wrapped in a warm, vibrating wool blanket. On V, the blanket has been replaced by a tracksuit. The lineup shifts have allowed for a newfound patience in the songwriting; the riffs aren’t just there to knock you over anymore, instead they build in intensity that wouldn’t feel out of place on a Crown Lands or Howling Giant record.

Ultimately, V is the sound of a band growing up and realizing that you can’t stay in the “heavy psych” basement forever without eventually wanting to see what’s in the attic. By embracing a more traditional prog-rock sensibility, Weedpecker has avoided the trap of self-parody that plagues so many of their peers. They’ve swapped the “green dragon” for a more sophisticated beast, one that demands more of the listener but offers a far more panoramic view in return. It’s a dense, rewarding listen that proves you can be “progressive” without losing the “rock” in the process.

While the eleven-minute opener “Fading Whispers” acts as a grand mission statement, it is “Mirrors” that truly steals the show if only with its concise punchiness. It’s the best place to start precisely because it captures the band’s new identity without taking the listener on an all-day excursion. Where other tracks on the record occasionally risk floating off into the ether of “lounge-prog,” “Mirrors” maintains a grounded, propulsive gravity. It balances the band’s legacy of heavy, rhythmic chugging with the record’s new penchant for crystalline textures. It feels like the most honest reflection—pun intended—of where Weedpecker stands today: a band that can still punch you in the gut, but now prefers a more complex combo to keep you on your heels.
