Sir Paul Seems To Be Settling Nicely Into His Creepy Old Man Phase
Song of the Day: “As You Lie There” by Paul McCartney
With Dungeon Lane, Paul McCartney proves once again that he is utterly incapable of retiring quietly into the sunset. Instead, the octogenarian pop chameleon has delivered a record that feels less like a cozy, late-career victory lap and more like a midnight stroll through a musical funhouse. This album marks a hilarious pivot in the grand McCartney evolution. If his McCartney III era was about rustic, organic experimentation, The Boys of Dungeon Lane sees Macca leaning into a polished, slightly surreal sonic landscape. It perfectly bridges the whimsical avant-garde leanings of his Fireman side-project with the structural precision of Chaos and Creation in the Backyard. While the musical choices and production on this record have a modern feel, lyrically he’s definitely looking back through his llife.
The track that will guarantee you look at Sir Paul a bit differently from now on, is the album opener “As You Lie There.” Musically, it is yet another great example of how to build a mood—McCartney anchors the track with an understated cascading piano motif that recalls the melancholic majesty of “You Never Give Me Your Money,” only layered with dirty guitar lines and an aggressively thumping bassline that proves his fingers haven’t lost a step. The song moves effortlessly from spoken word to sweetly sung verses, culminating in a soaring, shouted chorus that is so ridiculously catchy it honestly feels unfair. It’s the kind of arrangement that reminds you why the man’s melodic instincts are practically a matter of historical record.
However, we need to talk about the elephant in the studio: the shocking creepiness of the lyrics! “As You Lie There” features McCartney leaning heavily into a voyeuristic, obsessive persona that sits incredibly uncomfortably alongside the song’s comparatively bright, sunny chord progressions. He sings from the perspective of an fixated onlooker watching the object of his affection, delivering lines that hover on the razor-thin edge between sweet affection and a Restraining Order. It’s a classic Macca trope taken to a dark extreme—wrapping an intensely bizarre, borderline sinister premise in a musical blanket so warm and inviting you don’t realize you’re shivering until the track ends.
Ultimately, Dungeon Lane fits nicely into McCartney’s massive discography as the work of an artist who has run completely out of shits to give, resulting in some of his most daring choices in years. “As You Lie There” stands out precisely because it refuses to play it safe. It forces the listener to balance the joy of a brilliant pop arrangement with the distinct, nagging urge to get up and double-check that the front door is locked.
