Song of the Day: “Break” by Gully Boys
Self-titled, full-length debut, Gully Boys is magnificent noise.
The Minneapolis trio Gully Boys—Kathy Callahan (vocals/rhythm guitar), Mariah Timm (lead guitar/vocals), Natalie Klemond (bass/vocals), and Nadi McGill (drums/vocals)—released their self-titled, full-length album, Gully Boys on October 3rd, 2025. This record solidifies the band’s position in the modern indie-rock landscape, delivering a consistent and powerful collection of songs that continue to refine their sound.
The album maintains the raw energy that characterized their earlier EPs but presents it with noticeably improved production quality. The tracks draw heavily on ‘90s alt rock and grunge influences, balancing driving rhythms with melodic hooks, creating a more aggressive sound than you normally hear from all female bands.
From the first punch of “Break” to the final, lingering crash of “Gimme A Second,” the album is a relentless, melodic assault on the patriarchy, your ex, and maybe even the concept of having a “good day.” Lyrically, the album is sharply focused on themes of frustration, emotional vulnerability, and defiance. Tracks like “Mother” and “Murderapolis” set an aggressive tone. Conversely, songs such as “Bad Day” explore more personal struggles with frank honesty. The consistent strength of the album lies in its ability to pair Callahan’s urgent vocal delivery with dynamic musical shifts, frequently moving from subdued verses to explosive choruses.
The album’s opening track, “Break” functions as a perfect thesis for the entire album. It launches instantly with a high-gain, driving riff and dynamic drumming, grabbing the listener’s attention immediately. The speed and aggression right out of the gate highlights Natalie Klemond’s driving bass line and Nadi McGill’s powerful drumming as the indispensable backbone to Kathy Callahan’s guitar and work. The repeated refrain and Callahan’s strained vocal delivery in the chorus convey a universal sense of frustration and impending collapse. This raw, direct expression of emotional overload perfectly captures the core appeal of their grunge-influenced sound. Definitely worth checking out
