Song of the Day: “Cat Got Your Tongue” by Thomas Raggi
Move over, Måneskin—there’s a new heavy hitter on guitar making his solo-project debut. Thomas Raggi (Måneskin’s axe slinger) is plugging in, turning up, and has invited every rock legend in his contact list to a very loud house party.
Produced by the high priest of “how-did-he-make-that-noise” guitar, Tom Morello, Masquerade is an 8-track riot that feels less like a debut and more like a victory lap from someone who’s been unshackled from expectation. It’s unashamedly vintage, slightly chaotic, and possesses the kind of swagger that only a man who’s “real” band gets over 22M monthly listeners on Spotify alone.
Raggi didn’t just step into the spotlight; he brought a literal army with him. We’ve got a who’s-who roster of Morello, Beck, Chad Smith, Matt Sorum, and Alex Kapranos all contributing to a record that sounds like a 70s arena rock concert crashing into a 90s grunge basement. It’s “rock ‘n’ roll stripped to its bones,” if those bones were made of pure voltage and Italian flair.
While “Getcha!” has the star power (with Zep, RATM & Beasties references) and “You Spin Me Round” provides the inevitable kitschy rock-disco cover, my choice for where to start with Masquerade is “Cat Got Your Tongue.” Kasabian’s abrasive, indie-electronic-rock sensibilities collide with Raggi’s heavy riffs to create a two-pronged attack. While Morello’s production fingerprints (and occasional guitar squeals) are all over the record, “Cat Got Your Tongue” feels the most like Raggi asserting his own identity. It’s mischievous, kinetic, and a dose of high energy rock we haven’t really seen too much from Gen Z artists. Better late than never!
