Song of the Day: “Falling Down” by Mynd Reader
In an era where “rock is dead” is a headline recycled more often than a plastic water bottle, the Colorado-based outfit Mynd Reader has arrived with a self-titled debut that suggests the genre isn’t actually dead—it was just hiding out in a Boulder basement, waiting for the right moment to get its hands dirty again. Released in early 2026, Mynd Reader is a ten-track exercise in “grown-up rock,” a record that trades the frantic, sweaty energy of youth for the kind of weathered wisdom usually found at the bottom of a bourbon neat.
The project’s DNA traces back to the reconnection of Brian Sachs and Matt Schultz (who performs and produces under the name Tonin). Sachs, whose percussive history involves surviving the high-octane 90s jam scene with The Authority, found himself in a period of profound personal unravelling—navigating the loss of his mother, the end of a long-term marriage, and the departure of his business. He spent this time filling notebooks with “downloads”—unfiltered, raw lyrical reflections on survival.
When Sachs reconnected with Tonin in Boulder around 2022, what began as a casual exchange of ideas became a full-scale renovation. The final, vital piece of the puzzle was Shelby Kemp. If Sachs provides the bones and Tonin the skin, Kemp provides the blood. A powerhouse vocalist with a Southern-steeped rasp, Kemp’s voice has the uncanny ability to sound both exhausted and invincible. His raw, emotional delivery turned what could have been a purely “studio project” into a living, breathing entity that feels like it was raised on a diet of Black Crowes records and Chris Stapleton’s whiskey.
While there are a number of obvious picks for SOTD from this record (“Mourning Light,” “Oslo,” and “Home” were all considered), I kept coming back to the visceral, slow-burn standout “Falling Down.” It’s a track that trades the polished, cinematic “big rock” sound for something more jagged and immediate. It’s the sound of gravity winning, and it’s handled with a level of musical sophistication that prevents it from ever feeling like a pity party. Sachs’ lyrics are at their most transparent here. It’s one thing to write about triumphantly finding “Home”; it’s another to document the freefall that precedes it. Shelby Kemp delivers a performance that sounds like he’s physically bracing for impact… His voice catches in all the right places, lending the song a “first take” authenticity. Amidst an album of survival, “Falling Down” provides the necessary weight. Without this track, the highs of the record wouldn’t feel as earned. It provides the “low” that makes the “high” of the rest of the album actually mean something.
