Song of the Day: “Gettin’ The Band Back Together” by The Kyle Gass Band
When half of “The Greatest Band in the World” decides to record a live album in a brewery in Palmdale, you know you’re either in for a very loud, classic rock inspired afternoon. With Live in Palmdale, released at the end of January 2026, the Kyle Gass Band (KGB) settles comfortably into their typical high-energy, if somewhat periodic live shows. Recorded at Transplants Brewing, the album captures the “Rage Kage” in his natural habitat: surrounded by craft beer, loyal fans, and a band so tight they come across as a yet to open cactus blossom.
For those following the Kage-verse, this record marks a significant point in Gass’s evolution. If Tenacious D is the “slow-moving dinosaur” that occasionally lumbers into stadiums, the Kyle Gass Band is the agile off-road vehicle that actually enjoys the bumps. Since the 2013 debut and 2016’s Thundering Herd, Gass has spent years proving he isn’t just a sidekick waiting for Jack Black to finish a movie. Live in Palmdale strips away the studio sheen, showcasing a group of “badass dudes” (including longtime D collaborator John Konesky) who can actually shred. It represents a pivot toward the “working man’s rock star” aesthetic—less about the destiny of the next grandiose production, and more about the destiny of how to pay the next month’s rent.
The album is a 12-track victory lap of high-energy, tongue-in-cheek hard rock. While the humor is ever-present, the musicianship is what prevents it from becoming a novelty act. The band navigates the “Bro Code” and “Cakey” with a precision that suggests they might be taking the music more seriously than the lyrics—a classic Gass move. Live in Palmdale feels like a journeyman musician finally relaxing into his own career.
The album opener, “Gettin’ the Band Back Together” is the album’s spiritual heartbeat and just a genuinely fun tune. It acknowledges the absurdity of the rock-and-roll lifestyle while simultaneously doubling down on it as a self-aware nod to his longevity in the industry. There is something inherently hilarious and heartwarming about watching Kyle Gass—a man who has technically “gotten the band back together” dozens of times across various projects—singing about the struggle of recruiting a drummer who still has his own kit. He manages to balance the irony of the lyrics with a genuine “classic rock” grit that makes the chorus feel like a stadium anthem, even if it’s being played on a somewhat smaller stage in the SoCal desert just north of LA.
