Song of the Day: “Heathcliff” by Snocaps
A Low-Stakes Supergroup That, Shockingly, Works
Mixing it up a bit for today’s SOTD by swapping out the heavy distortion, extended jams, math rock, and male voices with one from the ladies.
Let’s be honest… for those of us who tend to skip over the more self-serious corners of indie-rock, the announcement of a new “supergroup” featuring the Crutchfield sisters felt like a promise of more acoustic introspection or undercooked punk. Snocaps’ self-titled debut, however, is the rare instance where a high-profile sibling reunion actually delivers immediate, accessible payoff.
This album sounds less like a deeply personal therapy session and more like a genuinely great ‘90s college-rock record. The 13 tracks are short, sharp, and tightly constructed, managing to successfully fuse Allison’s knack for power-pop melodies with Katie’s ingrained sense of emotional honesty—all wrapped up in a package that sounds far more polished and, dare we say, fun than expected. It’s a welcome palate cleanser from other more pretentious, but otherwise soulless indie rock offerings of late.
The song that best exemplifies what this record has to offer is undoubtedly “Heathcliff.” The criterion for this choice is its ability to build dramatic, emotional weight with the bare minimum of instruments and notes, but without sacrificing the album’s essential quality of immediate, infectious indie-rock melody. The authenticity of the artists is unimpeachable when they sing together, and showcases a vocal and compositional maturity they’ve cultivated over the last decade.
