Song of the Day: “I Can’t Get You Out Of My Mind” by Luke Marzec

Luke Marzec’s debut album, Something Good Out of Nothing, is what happens when a classically trained multi-instrumentalist decides his life needs less stiff collars and more narrowboats and modular synthesizers. The result is a lush, genre-bending swirl that fuses vintage soul, R&B grooves, and jazz complexity with the sort of light-touch electronica that suggests the artist spent lockdown listening to equal parts Amy Winehouse and a BBC documentary on sound design. The album is neatly cleaved into two “sides” for the vinyl purists—With the first half looking back in order to make sense of what has been, likely as a means to support and inform the more forward facing second half. Marzec’s voice, which possesses the kind of throaty, gravelly depth that makes him sound perpetually three drinks into a serious conversation, manages to sell everything from buoyant funk jams to acoustic ballads. It’s a sophisticated sound that makes you feel smarter just by listening.

While the whole nine-track album makes a cohesive statement, the true standout, and the song that earns the album its immediate gravitas, is the electrifying opener, “I Can’t Get You Out Of My Mind.” Forget the soft, fireside acoustic stuff… we’re here for the pure, unadulterated bang. This track immediately proves Marzec didn’t spend ALL his time pondering the nature of man; he clearly spent some of it crafting perfect, head-nodding funk. It kicks off with swirling synth arpeggios that build before dropping anchor into a mesmerizing, deep-pocket groove that’s equal parts funk, soul. Apparently, It was the last song Marzec recorded for the record, and you can tell—it has the confident swagger of an artist who finally found the punchy track needed to grab the listener and pull them into his soulful, psychedelic world.

It’s so good, you genuinely won’t be able to get it out of your mind (yes, I went there).
