Song of the Day: “I Did It For Love” by The Lone Bellow
What A Time To Be Alive, arrived on February 13th like a Valentine’s Day card written in grit and soul. In the grand arc of The Lone Bellow, this album will forever be known as the one that almost wasn’t. After having their gear and a hard drive containing the original sessions stolen in Chicago, the trio—Zach Williams, Kanene Pipkin, and Brian Elmquist—had to decide whether to grieve or groove. They chose the latter, and used the theft of their gear and hard work as an excuse to burn the old blueprints.
Decamping to Muscle Shoals and re-recording the entire project live, involving their full touring band (including drummer Julian Dorio and multi-instrumentalist Tyler Geertsma) in the writing process for the first time, they’ve traded their “indie-folk darlings” card for something far more muscular.
The evolution here is one of unpretentious survival. This isn’t just three-part harmony; it’s a full-band conversation where the rhythm section finally gets to speak as loudly as the vocalists. It’s the sound of a band that has been through the ringer and realized that their greatest asset wasn’t their vintage instruments, but the decade-and-a-half of friendship that the thieves couldn’t pack into a getaway van.
While the album features an exceptionally well-done, and surprisingly non-ironic cover of early 80s classic “Islands in the Stream” (made popular by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton), as well as other great tracks like “You Were Leaving” and “Night Goes Black,” my overall pick from the record has to be “I Did It For Love.” I usually avoid stereotypical “love songs” as a policy, but If this song were any more infectious, they’d need to slap a warning sticker featuring Tony Fauci’s face on the album. It anchors itself to a rhythmic, driving pulse that feels like the raw energy of a heartbeat after three cups of coffee. The hook doesn’t just stick in your head; it sets up camp and refuses to leave. It manages to be a high-energy “stadium” moment without the overproduced gloss and has that rare, elusive quality of sounding like a classic you’ve known for years, even though it’s only been out for a week.
