Song of the Day: “I Know Where Mark Chen Lives” by Joyce Manor
Have you ever thought to yourself “You know, I like Blink-182 but their songs are just way too long!” If so, read on…
Joyce Manor has spent the better part of two decades perfecting the art of the “blink and you’ll miss it” anthem. On their latest, I Used to Go to This Bar, the band continues their long-standing tradition of writing songs that are shorter than the time it takes to actually find a parking spot at a dive bar. It’s an album that feels like a spiritual homecoming for fans who have aged out of the mosh pit but still have the muscle memory to scream along to a chorus about social inadequacy.
In the band’s early days, Joyce Manor was defined by a frantic, bleeding-heart urgency… Music for people who have a lot of feelings, but even more adrenaline. As they’ve evolved, they’ve traded some of that raw serration for a power-pop sheen that is arguably more dangerous because it’s so damn catchy. They’ve moved from the “I’m screaming because I’m twenty” phase into the “I’m singing loudly because I’m getting older and everything is slightly more complicated” phase. This record represents the apex of that transition: it’s polished, punchy, and carries the weary wisdom of a band that knows exactly how many chords are required to make a grown adult feel nostalgic for a time in their life they barely remember.
While the title track captures the album’s thematic spirit, “I Know Where Mark Chen Lives” is the one that got my attention right out the gate as the album opener. It is the quintessential Joyce Manor song because it bridges the gap between their “noise punk” roots and their current status as the de facto kings of the two-minute (or less) power-pop tragedy. The song starts with a chugging, isolation-heavy guitar line that recalls their self-titled debut before exploding into a chorus that is impossible not to shout back. It functions as a meta-commentary on their own career and a love letter to the underground scene they grew up in, delivered with the professional tightness of a band that has long since outgrown VFW halls. At the same time, the song manages to feel both “brutal” and “crisp,” proving that you don’t need a five-minute runtime to deliver a gut punch.
