Song of the Day: “My Mind Has Been Consumed By Media” by Goose
Over 4 hours of media in fact, live from Madison Square Garden NYC
Goose’s Live at Madison Square Garden is not merely an album; It’s an immersive, exhaustive, and frankly, mildly intimidating document of their biggest gig to date. Spanning enough hours to almost qualify as a legal work week, this record captures the moment the Connecticut quintet ascended to the jam-band throne.
This performance is a snapshot of a band captured at the absolute top of their game… With Peter Anspach’s synth swell perfectly modulated, Trevor Weeks’ bass notes tasty and powerful, and every guitar solo Rick Mitarotonda takes sounding impossibly fresh despite their crazy length, It reassures you that yes, they really can hold a groove for the length of a cross-country flight without ever sounding tired or repetitive. Put simply, this album is a beautifully executed, highly polished surrender to the jam.
To choose the best song on a sprawling live record like this I was compelled to use some reverse psychology. Rather than highlight the longest jam, tastiest solo, or “best” version of a song they play nearly every show, I went the other direction. The shortest song on a record, The tightest arrangement, and the one that sounds the least like the band’s other songs are all factors that stand out. Which is why the top spot must go to the self-aware “My mind has Been Consumed By Media.” The song has drummer Cotter Ellis taking lead vocals with backups provided by Rick and Peter, which is appropriate since the song originates from Ellis’ prior band Swimmer. Clocking in at just under 5 minutes (on a record with at least eight 16 to 22 minute songs) it’s an explosion acknowledging the permanent dopamine saturation of contemporary existence.
Now, let’s address the elephant in the room… The tightly wound funk rhythm and self-aware lyrical themes are practically a masterclass in David Byrne-esque delivery, suggesting that if the Talking Heads ever decided to regroup in a Connecticut basement, this would be the result. That’s ok though, since the Heads don’t seem to be regrouping anytime soon I’ll take more of whatever I can get. It’s the ultimate jam-band trap: a nifty little ditty to get you sucked in to a gorgeous, hypnotic black hole of sound for hours on end, if you let it.
