Song of the Day: “Skyline” by DZ Deathrays
Seven albums in, DZ Deathrays have finally reached the stage of their career where they can stop pretending they might eventually have to get “real jobs.” Released on January 16, 2026, Easing Out Of Control represents the Brisbane trio’s successful transition from “young punks with noise complaints” to “seasoned veterans of the Australian psyche.” It’s an album that manages to be both a mid-life crisis and a house party simultaneously, showcasing a band that is—much like the title suggests—slowly letting go of the steering wheel to explore what’s in the ditch.
From the surveillance-state paranoia of the title track to the vulnerability of “Real Love,” the album is a 30-minute victory lap. They’ve managed to age without becoming boring, proving that even if they are easing out of control, they’re doing it with enough style to make the crash look intentional.
Following the “Remember It’s For Fun” (R.I.F.F.) ethos of 2023, this album is a more textured, existential beast. It bridges the gap between the scorched-earth thrash of their 2012 debut Bloodstreams and a newer, more spacious indie-rock sensibility that occasionally sounds like The Strokes if they had grown up on a diet of cheap beer and Vegemite toast.
While the album is peppered with the usual riff-heavy suspects, the standout track—and the one that best captures their current trajectory—is “Skyline.” It is the ultimate evolution of the “DZ sound,” trading in some of their trademark abrasive distortion for a shimmering, driving energy that feels larger in scale. It’s a song built for late-night drives and festival sunsets, proving that Shane Parsons and the crew can write a genuine anthem without relying solely on the “loud-quiet-loud” formula.
