Song of the Day : “Sprout” by Stereosity
A song that will definitely change your life… actually, it won’t, but it’s still really good!
Stereosity’s debut full-length, New Life Will Grow, is a testament to the fact that you can still make genuinely interesting music in a genre that sometimes feels like it’s perpetually trying to untangle its own shoelaces. Described by some as “math rock,” this album manages to be technical without sacrificing the feels.
The band, fronted by Sam Krones, has clearly spent a respectable amount of time in the practice room. The guitar work is suitably dizzying, all those signature tapped arpeggios and odd time signatures, combined with the look of the band, makes you wonder if the group is just a rebranding of their school’s math club. It’s the kind of music that appeals to anyone who believes a song’s appeal is directly proportional to the number of notes played (author’s note: “Guilty!”).
The lyrical themes, focusing on growth, struggle, and the general messiness of existing, are delivered with a passionate earnestness. They manage to avoid being excessively sappy, which is a common hazard when singing about emotional development while simultaneously playing a riff that sounds like a spider weaving a complex web. It’s a solid, well-produced album that successfully plants its flag in the fertile ground between ‘90s Midwest Emo and contemporary Math Rock.
With an album titled New Life Will Grow, it’s almost obligatory to highlight the one track that most literally invokes the title’s theme. While Stereosity offers plenty of high-energy complexity (“Sonata in C#”) and tracks with absurd titles like “Cocaine Bear,” it is the understated intensity of “Sprout“ that truly blossoms while capturing the slow-burn emotional dynamic that the band excels at. While other songs may be more aggressive or structurally bewildering, “Sprout” is the track that best balances the math and the heart of Stereosity’s sound, making it the undeniable core of New Life Will Grow.
