Song of the Day : “Time On My Mind” by Wild Wild Wets
If you’ve ever wondered what it sounds like when a garage band decides to stop huffing spray paint and starts huffing the crystalline residue of a vintage synthesizer, look no further than Wild Wild Wets’ Time Mutations. This record finds the San Diego psych-staples moving away from the hazy, reverb-drenched fuzz of their earlier work and into a territory that feels suspiciously like they’ve discovered a very high-definition version of 1974 but refer to it as “the future.” The fuzz is still there, but there are now interesting arrangements and note choices beneath the atmosphere.
Where previous efforts like Prisom felt like a frantic sprint through a neon-lit alleyway, Time Mutations feels like the band has finally caught their breath and decided to build a luxury lounge in that same alley, and move in. The songwriting is tighter, the production is hi-fi without losing its soul, and the band has leaned heavily into their post-punk influences. It’s less about the “wild” and more about the “wets”—slick, fluid transitions and rhythmic pulses that suggest the band has traded some of their garage-rock grit for a collection of very expensive pedals and a newfound appreciation for rhythmic discipline.
Time Mutations is a successful pivot. It’s a record for people who like their psychedelia with a side of technical precision and quality songwriting. It’s an evolution that proves you can grow up and get “professional” without becoming boring.
While the album is remarkably consistent, the opener “Time On My Mind” serves as the emotional and sonic anchor of the record, perfectly capturing the “mutation” the title promises. While other tracks lean into the post-punk psych leanings, this song leans into a lush, melancholic psych-pop sensibility that sounds like a band that has stopped trying to outrun the shadow of the Talking Heads and decided to invite them in for a drink. The swirling synth textures, percussive punctuation, and melodic guitar lines create a sense of drift that feels both nostalgic and slightly unnerving. It captures a specific brand of stylish paranoia but delivers it with a vulnerability we haven’t quite seen from them before.
