Song of the Day: “Who Should I Say Is Calling?” by Demob Happy
Released on January 30, 2026, Demob Happy’s fourth studio outing, The Grown-Ups Are Talking, suggests that after a decade of being rock’s most reliable purveyors of “heavy, but fashionable,” the band has decided to doff the glittery exterior distraction and settle some internal debts. Recorded at the legendary Rancho De La Luna in the California High Desert, the album carries that unmistakable Joshua Tree dust—dry, gritty, and slightly hallucinogenic—while managing to keep one foot firmly planted in the rainy pavement of their Brighton roots.
For a band that once seemed destined to become the UK’s answer to the “Indie Sleaze” revival, Demob Happy has matured into something much more interesting. This release represents a pivot from the glossy, synth-laden futurism of 2023’s Divine Machines. If that album was the band trying on a space suit to see if it fit, The Grown-Ups Are Talking is the sound of them returning to Earth, realizing they’ve lost their keys, and deciding to scream about it over a fuzz pedal. It’s a homecoming that feels like a well-timed refinement, swapping the sci-fi polish for a raw, “on-tape” authenticity that makes you suspicious of whether the riffs are staining your carpet.
While the album offers plenty of high-octane moments, “Who should I say is Calling?” is the one that really stuck with me. It is the record’s most sophisticated moment; operating as a mid-tempo creep that feels like a noir film set in a dive bar. The track stands out because it leans into the band’s penchant for Beatles-esque harmonies but drags them through a filter of desert-rock paranoia. Where other songs on the album hit you with a sledgehammer, “Who should I say is Calling?” unfolds more delicately. It features a serpentine bass groove that anchors the track while Matthew Marcantonio delivers his most charismatic vocal performance to date—a mixture of polite inquiry and low-level threat. They aren’t just playing loud to fill the room anymore; they’re playing quiet to make you lean in.
