Weird Music Wednesday: “The Good Life” by Sleaford Mods
Feat. Gwendoline Christie & BIG SPECIAL
The Demise of Planet X finds Sleaford Mods in a peculiar position: they are now the elder statesmen of a genre they essentially birthed by accident. After years of perfecting the art of the “angry man with thick East-end Cockney accent shouting over a Casio keyboard,” Jason Williamson and Andrew Fearn have reached a stage where their minimalism feels less like a budget constraint and more like a high-end architectural choice. This record is leaner and meaner, stripping away some of the dance-floor flirtations of their previous outings in favor of a cold, post-punk claustrophobia that suggests the “Planet X” in question might just be a metaphor for the damp, digital rot of 2026.
Evolutionarily, this album represents the band moving from the “agitated pub brawl” phase into something more akin to a “cynical documentary filmmaker.” Williamson’s vocal delivery has shifted; he isn’t just barking at passersby anymore. There’s a newfound cadence that sits somewhere between a spoken-word poet and a man trying to explain a complicated insurance claim in close proximity of heavy machinery. Meanwhile, Fearn’s production has evolved from basic loops into skeletal, haunting soundscapes. It’s the sound of a band that has realized they don’t need to shout to be heard, though they’ll still shout anyway just to make sure you’re paying attention.
While all songs on Sleaford Mods records are weird by default (see comment above about “angry man shouting over a Casio keyboard”), The opening track, “The Good Life,” is as good as any other place to start when talking about this weird project. Additionally, Sleaford Mods have always been a duo, but here they’ve invited a crowd. Featuring both the duo Big Special and—most unexpectedly—actress Gwendoline Christie, the track feels less like a song and more like a bizarre piece of fringe theater staged in a parking garage. It’s a brave, bizarre pivot that feels like the band is intentionally trying to see how much of the listener’s patience they can spend on a high-concept psychodrama.
