When funk royalty and a shredding metal icon collide, your speakers won’t know what hit them
Weird Music Wednesday: “Metal Health Revibed” (Feat. Victor Wooten) by Bootsy Collins & Buckethead
When the iconic architect of funk Bootsy Collins and the KFC-bucket-wearing shredding robot Buckethead decide to team up for a full-length record like Metal Health, you already know you aren’t getting background music for a relaxing Sunday picnic. Rather than leaning into the avant-garde chaos of their early nineties collabs or the cartoonishness that defined much of Bootsy’s solo catalog, this record treats heavy concepts with a surprisingly steady hand. It rounds up an unprecedented lineup of bass talent—enlisting heavyweights like Robert Trujillo, Victor Wooten, and Billy Sheehan—to construct a sound that is as technically rigorous as it is conceptually ambitious. This is an album that trades self-parody for a genuine, heavy-duty exploration of psychological weight, utilizing the friction between funk and extreme metal not as a novelty, but as a legitimate vehicle for emotional catharsis.
The evolution here is pretty fascinating. Back in the day, when these two first crossed paths on projects like Praxis, the collision of funk and heavy metal felt like an unpredictable underground collision. Fast-forward to Metal Health, and the madness has been refined into a purposeful, star-studded crusade. Instead of just throwing distortion at a wall to see what sticks, Bootsy and Buckethead corral an Avengers-level assembly of bass royalty to back up their sonic therapy sessions. It expands on Bootsy’s penchant for theatrical conceptual albums, trading purely cartoonish outer-space shenanigans for a joyful, high-volume confrontation with human anxiety. The music remains dense and structurally demanding, yet it operates with a singular focus that was largely missing from previous offerings from the duo.
It’s a unique challenge trying to pick pick the weirdest song on an album that epitomizes the spirit of joyful weirdness to the degree this one does, but “Metal Health Revibed” (featuring Victor Wooten) still manages to stand out as one of the weirder songs in the bunch. And that is saying something on a record where songs casually bounce between existential dread and aggressive slap-bass workouts. The track takes the already dizzying premise of the album and tosses it into a blender with extra sonic gymnastics, pairing Victor Wooten’s mathematically precise fretboard gymnastics with a rhythm section that actively subverts expectations, the track creates an atmosphere of sustained tension. It is intentionally disorienting, stripping away the comfort of standard song structures to mirror the erratic nature of the mental state the album seeks to address.
